Orphan adoption, 2021: make them disappear

UPDATE:  The winner of the drawing is Cindy Smith.
Thank you all who entered!

Woohoo!  It's time for Cynthia's spring orphan adoption link up at Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework.   Here is the link  to the event.

In 2012 I gave a guild workshop on "disappearing" blocks.  That was before Jenny Doan brought the design concept to YouTube.  I  kept all the class samples I made -- the raw blocks, initial cuts, assembled blocks, and flimsies. I lent them to a friend to use in a class and she returned them. They've been on a shelf for ages.

And now you can have them!  You'll get ALL of these -- and  I'll include goodies to fill the flat-rate box.

To qualify to win you must fulfill ALL FOUR of these requirements:

(1) Leave a comment stating the author and title of a book you've read recently and recommend. It CANNOT be a quilting book.  It CAN be an audiobook.

(2) Enter by 8:00 AM CDT Thursday, March 25.  I will draw the winner that morning.

(3) If you are a no-reply blogger include your email address so I can contact you.

(4) U.S. addresses only.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Adoption winner and some humor

I thank everyone who commented on my Orphan Adoption post and shared what they are currently reading.  There were nine eligible entries.

The Random Number Generator chose #4 -- that's Cathy in Iowa.  Her blog is Sane, Crazy, Crumby Quilting .  She is the best scrap quilt designer!  I know she'll make the petal blocks in something terrific.

This meme was on FB yesterday.  I hope you, too, are enjoying being an artist-in-residence!

On the bright side, I am no longer calling this shelter-in-place. I am now an artist-in-residence.

Spring cleaning -- it's adoption time!

For several years Cynthia at Quilting is More Fun Than Housework  has sponsored an orphan block adoption.  I'm delighted that she's doing it again this month.

In preparation for the event I surveyed the contents of the Parts Department.  (Boy, do I have a LOT of half-square triangles.)  As usual when I look at these units and blocks I think, "But I could do something with this . . . and this . . . and, oh, these will be great for thus-and-such . . ." and back into the box they go.

But these blocks I happily offer to you.  The design is from  Playful Petals by Corey Yoder I made five blocks and prepared five additional pairs of petals before I went on to other things.

These blocks can be yours!

Between today and Monday, March 23, leave a comment.  I will choose the winner on Tuesday, March 24.

Anyone is welcome to comment but in order to qualify for the drawing you MUST meet these criteria:
(a)  Your comment must include the title and author of the book that you're reading or listening to now. (Fiction, nonfiction, adult, YA, juvenile. Surely you are reading something!)  If you only give the title it doesn't count. If you only give the author it doesn't count.
(b)  You must have an e-mail address so I can notify you if you are the winner.  If you don't provide an e-mail address it doesn't count.
(c)   You must have a U.S. mailing address.

Thanks for your interest -- and thanks again to Cynthia for hosting the link up.

Adoption time -- and equal pay!

Quilting is more fun than Housework

3/27 update:  Thanks to all who read my post and took time to learn about the gender pay gap.  The winners are
Shasta -- apple blocks
Sherry -- bordered rails
Tami -- Seminole bands

Cynthia has opened the annual Quilty Orphan Adoption.  I'm pleased to join the group.  [See all the orphan offerings HERE ]

This year I'm offering *three*  giveaways.  These blocks have lingered in the spare parts/orphan boxes for far too long.  It's time for another quiltmaker to give them a good home. (Sewing them into a quilt would be a bonus.)

#1     23 apples from a 2009 Block Swappers exchange.  They are 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" unfinished.

#2    18  bordered rails left over from this project (2016).  The blocks are 8-1/2" unfinished.

#3    Seminole bands.  They are 8-1/2" wide and come in three pieces:  100", 32", and 25".   I think I'd intended to border bed sheets and coordinating pillowcases, but I can't remember. They would work well in a strippy quilt or as quilt borders.  With 100" you could trim a skirt in the style of the original Seminole clothing.

But wait! There's more!  Along with each set of blocks I will send a package of quilty gifts -- maybe a book, maybe a pattern, maybe some fabric.

In order to win one of these three sets I'm asking you to take a few minutes to become informed about the gender pay gap.

Read the background and research here.

See how your state (and congressional district) stack up here .

To enter the giveaway -- for the blocks + gift package -- leave a comment that includes
(a)  One thing you learned about the gender pay gap [in addition to the information in the graphic in this post]
(b)  How your state compares in the gender pay gap
(c)  Which set of blocks (apples, rails, Seminole bands) you want to win.

If you are a no-reply blogger include your email address. [If you are a "reply" blogger then your reply will have your email.]   ** I will mail to U.S. addresses only.**
If you do not include responses to (a), (b), and (c), and if you do not provide an email address, then you cannot qualify to win.

I will draw the winners on Wednesday morning, March 27, 2019.

Good luck!

Weekly update: orphan adoption winner, a finish, and more progress

Thank you, everyone who entered the Orphan Adoption giveaway.   18 people replied with 28 entries. Four people (five entries) disqualified themselves by not providing an email address.  I numbered the remaining entries and Random.org chose #8 -- DJQuilting.  Congratulations!

I came down with a cold or mild case of flu (yes, I got a flu shot).  I was able to mitigate the effects with a lot of sleep (ah, NyQuil) and I am all better now.  AAUW met on Tuesday with an interesting program about the Underground Railroad in Waukegan and Lake County. (Nary a peep about the "quilt code" which we quiltmakers know is false. (Fake history!))  The Zion Woman's Club helped   the Zion Conservatory of Music for the spring concert and fundraising luncheon. I donated a HeartStrings quilt and two tote bags with advance reader copies (forthcoming books) that got respectable bids.  In turn I did not bid on anything!

I got a lot done in the studio this week.

I quilted Bright Zigzag.

I made the March batch of 48 HeartStrings blocks. I'll send all of them -- six months' worth -- to Kathy M. for the Wisconsin HS sew-in.

I broke down and bought border fabric for the churn dash blocks sent by the ALA Biblioquilters.  The quilt shop had such lovely goods, but I remained steadfast and bought ONLY the 1-1/2 yards for this project. Now I'm auditioning backing fabric.

The churn dashes are 7.5" x 10" finished.

Here's the guild round robin for March.
.
I thought the b/w square-in-square blocks (from a swap last year) would be great. I sewed them on along with a black-and-bright stripe. Then I thought again.

I used Deb Tucker's Square 2 ruler to make a bunch of SIS blocks with bright centers.  I removed the b/w SIS blocks.  Much better!

Swap week: Whatchagot Box and Orphan Adoption

The Block Swappers host a Whatchagot Box swap every spring.  You send one participant a box of quilt-related stuff you no longer love and can live without. In return another participant sends you a box. I sent fabric, blocks, patterns, and a few notions to Michelle in North Carolina. Poppet in Florida sent me this box filled with novelty prints.  At 4 yards to a pound, it's 22 yards (coincidentally, that's the weight/yardage I sent to Michelle).

Cynthia is again hosting a Quilty Orphan Adoption. I'm offering these ten 9.5" (unf) nine-in-nine-patch blocks. I won them in the Block Lotto a couple of years ago. These ten were left over after I assembled a quilt top (this one).

[See other orphans on offer on Cynthia's blog:    here ]

Follow these simple rules to qualify to win these blocks.
(1) Leave a reply stating what you like most about your public library.
(2) Get a bonus entry by stating how you support your public library. (Are you a trustee? a member of the Friends? a volunteer?)
(3) Be sure that I can contact you if you win. (I cannot reply to "no-reply.")
(4)  I will ship to U.S. addresses only.
(5) Replies are due by midnight Central Time, Sunday, March 18, 2018.
(5)  No comment about the library / no reply contact / non-U.S. / sent after March 18 = no entry.
I will draw the winner on Monday, March 19.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Orphan adoption 2017: please pick these!

It's time for the 2017 quilty Orphan Adoption ! Thank you, Cynthia, for sponsoring this blog hop.

UPDATE:  there were 33 responses to this post at noon, CDT, 3/21 (per the stated rules). I asked my husband to pick a number between 1 and 33.  He said, "15."  That's Marianne.  I've notified her and as soon as I get her address I'll mail the blocks to her.  THANK YOU to all who left a comment.

I offer you a spring bouquet of 25 6.5" (unfin.) posy blocks.  The pattern is from Block Lotto and was selected as a Block Swappers' exchange.  I've used my swap proceeds in a couple of projects but now I'm in a clearing-out mood.

To qualify to win, follow these instructions:
A.  Leave a blog comment stating your favorite spring flower.  (Roses are not a spring flower. Nor are peonies or chrysanthemums.)
B.  Be sure there is a way for me to get your email address. (I cannot reply to "no-reply" commenters.)
C.  Enter by Tuesday, March 21, at 12:00 noon Central time.
C.  Follow instructions.   No spring flower, no email, posted after 12 noon CDT on 3/21 =  no entry
I will send to U.S. addresses only.

P.S. Skunk cabbage, so-called because there's a lot of stinky sulphur in the plant, is one of the earliest flowers to emerge from the leaf-litter in our woods.

Orphan winners! and OMG progress

My Orphan Adoption was instructive.  What I learned was that people don't follow the instructions! I stated than in order to qualify to win the entrant needed to state which of the two sets of blocks she (or he) wanted and to provide her email address.  More than one person said "either set" and more than one person was a "no-reply" blogger.

However, other entrants did follow the instructions.  I used a random number generator to choose the winners.

Karen won the New York Beauty blocks.  Her blog is  Tu-Na Quilts .

Cathy in California won the Barn Dance blocks.

Congratulations to both Karen and Cathy -- and thanks to everyone who entered!

I wrote that I needed to get going on my September OMG project:  Karleigh's t-shirt quilt.  Eva M was the high bidder for the t-shirt quilt I offer at the Rotary golf outing silent auction. Her granddaughter Karleigh brought the t-shirts over on Labor Day weekend.  I finally got to cutting and fusing and assembling.  Here's the result thus far.

It's adoption time!

Quilting is more fun than Housework

When Cynthia at Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework announced the 2016 Orphan Adoption Event I knew I'd be on board.

I reviewed the contents of the box o' blocks -- that's my name for the box of orphan blocks and "units" (four-patches, HSTs, and other pieces left over from projects).  I have chosen two sets of blocks for adoption.

If you would like a chance to win, leave a message in the comments by Wednesday, September 21.  State your preference.  If you write "either," you are not eligible. I will use a random number generator to choose the winners.  (I will pay postage (U.S. addresses only).  I need your email address to notify you. If you do not provide your email address then you are not eligible.)

SET 1:   Barn Dance blocks. These were a guild mystery several years ago.  Blocks are 13.5" unfinished.

SET 2:  New York Beauty blocks. These were prototypes for a quilt I made earlier this year. Blocks are 8.5" unfinished.
