Homespun churn dashes and something new

78 x 78 and 5 yards used!

I have trouble making "unbalanced" quilts with an even number of rows (i.e, seven columns and eight rows). Does that bother you, too?

Here's the new project.  It was inspired by "Sound Check" by John Kubiniec (McCall's, March/April 2014).  He used solids.

The fun part is choosing the fabric!

I've admired Wanda's (Exuberant Color)   16-patch block series.  I like the look with 30 patches, too.

  2. I really like the churn dash blocks. The classic simplicity of that with the double nine patches puts this quilt in a very special group!

  3. You need the uneven number of rows to make it balance.

  5. Oh, I really really like that churn dash with the alternate double nine patch. And the homespuns are just perfect for it.

Nice new project. I just saw Gretchen's finished quilt and fell in love. I had never seen a 30 patch quilt. Looks like you will have fun and probably have those blocks made in no time.

  6. As a matter of fact, he’s! Uneven rows DO bother me. Funny, that. I’m loving your new creation. It requires a lot of sewing, but the results are beautiful! Stay safe!

  9. No problem with odd sided quilts. Your churn dash is marvelous. What a great use of homespuns. Must figure something out for mine. I've done 16 patches before, but 30 is over achieving. It's going to be fantastic when done. Keep plugging away.

  10. If, like your churn dash, the corners do not match... like having your (more highly) pieced block at one end, and churn dash at the other... I change the number per row. I like square quilts because then no matter what side is up, it is correct, and they should all wear out evenly. Beautiful finish!
