The second character in Lynn's program was one of the Radium Girls who painted watch faces and clock dials at the Radium Dial factory in Ottawa, Illinois, in the 1920's and 30's. Most of those young workers succumbed to radiation poisoning decades before workplace safety and compensation.

In the studio: Courthouse Steps is a flimsy!72 x 80, 6 yards by weight. I gambled on having enough of the border fabric -- I had a strip and a half left.

OMG April summary: I had three goals.
YES #1 12 daisy mug rugs
NO #3 Five drawstring bags made from a friend's wedding dress, one for each of her granddaughters. I grew faint of heart with this and introduced that friend to another friend who was happy to have the commission. (The bags turned out beautifully.)

Your luncheon sounds fascinating. And getting two things done for OMG is going above and beyond. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI read a lot of WWII historical fiction and remember reading about women who painted the clocks and they would wet the paintbrushes by putting them in their mouth to get a sharp point and then dip them in radioactive paint. Can't imagine...gosh, there are so many interesting stories about WWII !!
ReplyDeleteThose daisy mug rugs sure are cute! And happy looking!
I'd not see the third goal as a miss, it was done in the month even if not by you.
ReplyDeleteAnother great finish nann...!
ReplyDeleteLove the courthouse steps, can't believe I have never made one of those! Oh my those daisy mug rugs are so sweet, are they pieced or applique?
ReplyDeleteOh I love all your projects and such a neat luncheon! I love the courthouse steps and those daisy mug rugs are adorable! Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteMadame Curie was one of my daughters early heroes and one reason she went into chemistry. My Guy has read Radium Girls and said it was a really disturbing book, he's worked with radioactive materials in the past. Congrats on doing so well on your goals. I think you finished number 3 just fine, they got done, you just didn't make them. Hope your May is as productive.
ReplyDeleteOh so interesting to learn about women in history... what a path they paved!!
ReplyDeleteand your quilt - oh wow!!! It is gorgeous!!
