On Wednesday I wrote that I was in no rush to make the string spiderweb blocks. I'm using Bonnie Hunter's paper-pieced method (more info here: String Spiderweb). Her instructions are from 2005. Yikes!

I pulled a blue print from the 30's stash and got enough wedges for 14 blocks. I finished them and still had a pile of 1-1/2" strips (and lots more uncut). I found the same print but in a slightly different blue and put that aside. A third print is a different pattern but a similar blue to the first and there's nearly a yard of it. That should be enough to make blocks for a whole quilt.
I will pick up Shelter in Place from the Barb, the quilter, tomorrow. I'll drop off the wedding quilt . There's been a change in wedding plans, however. After a lot of debate and discussion (and I'm sure with a few tears) they've decided to call off the big party. They'll have a very small private ceremony sometime this fall. When regulations permit they'll have the celebration. I'm going to send the quilt to them to arrive around the time of the small ceremony.

Really charming quilt. I can understand if you’re tired of 30s fabric but this looks like an antique and will be lovely when finished. I made one for out granddaughter when she graduated from HS and she took it off to college. It was fun to put lots of novelty fabrics in it with bright yellow stars.
ReplyDeleteLove the spider web blocks. The scrappy strings play well with the blue. You are the only person I know of that has a Penzey's collection that rivals mine. I have duplicates of many of my "can't live without," spices at our summer house. Unlike my excessive fabric collection, the spices actually get used.

ReplyDeleteI have always been intrigued be BH's spiderweb pattern. I have done mine in the traditional 45-degree wedges and, as a result, it is STILL not finished!
ReplyDeleteWe tossed all our old spices and set up new and fresh when Penzey's opened their store here. Our cabinet looks like yours plus we have the refill bags for many in the pantry. SO nice to have them here and not have to mail order (they're doing phone in orders, contactless payment, and curbside pick up by appointment).
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how many 30s fabrics there are. I had to enlarge your photo and look at what you have for 30s and I have a big bin still left and don't think mine match any of yours. I like sewing with them because they are such happy fabrics.
ReplyDeleteWe had a niece that was supposed to get married this month who also is getting married in a very small ceremony but will party later on if it is ever safe to party again. I gave her gift, also a quilt, to her mom who will attend the small ceremony. My sister-in-law lives near here but will travel to Chicago where my niece, her daughter, lives for the ceremony.
I only heard of Penzey's last year when my sister gave me a box of different Penzey cinnamons. I love cinnamon. I grow a lot of my own herbs like basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, parsley, cilantro, dill, sage and make my own herb blends for cooking. Also grow different hot peppers and dry and make our own rubs and blends for tacos and chili and whatever. But I don't grow cinnamon! (I wish).
Did you make a big dent in your 30's fabrics? I hope so. I'm happy to be moving on to a different UFO starting next week. And, then, maybe I'll allow myself to start a new project -- but something small! My BFF and Quilt Buddy introduced us to Penzy's years ago. We were in Ohio for a quilt show and had to hit the Penzy's just for fun. Then when we lived in Richmond area hubs and I would go to the local store. We have so many of them now I've run out of room to store them. Love their blends. No doubt later this fall I'll be ordering more! Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteSpiderweb quilts are so much fun. I've made two using a different pattern from the book the Quiltmaker's Gift. I love Penzey's. I usually buy mail order because the closest store is in Buffalo, over an hour away.
