It came just in the (Saint) nick of time. I had enough batting left for Black Diamond Strings without resorting to making a frankenbatt.
I auditioned several prints for the backing before I remembered this one. It's genuine vintage (36" wide), a gift from an AAUW friend some years ago. There's a yard remaining.
I used black thread to quilt serpentine lines through the center strings and at each block intersection.
Hooray for a finish! And now I'm just messing around . . .

What cute backing fabric! The caballero looks as though he's made from scissors.
ReplyDeleteDecades ago I picked up several yards of a fabric from a second-hand place. I was new to quilting and looking to build a stash. It depicts Cowboys and Indians, not at all in a PC-acceptable way you'd expect these days. I'm finding every excuse I can to hide it within other projects! Your fabric remains respectful of the culture it depicts.

Heh, at first I thought the last photo had been set to gray-scale to hide something (a potential gift, perhaps?) Then I noticed your ruler and cutting mat numbers (and floor--the longer I look at it, the more color I see). Congrats on the finish!

Nann, what a beautiful, colorful finish!!! I had to chuckle at the Saint Nick in time! And the vintage fabric--36" wide--definitely vintage!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a gorgeous quilt, Nann - I love all the color! And the perfect backing, too. For a moment I thought your last photo was taken in black and white! I like those blocks!
ReplyDeleteHave been admiring the diamond string block both on your blog and Stashbusters Group. Love it! May I ask what size rectangles you used? Beth in AL bhambeth at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI love the 'and now I'm just messing around'. I guess that's pretty much what I'm doing too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely finish, Nann;))) Great fabric for the backing too...hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Such a beautiful quilt!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a stellar finish your string quilt is! It’s getting harder and harder to resist starting one of my own NOW. But I’m trying to exercise a little discipline (“little” being the operative word) and finish all the quilt tops glaring at me from the closet. Got 4 basted today.
ReplyDeleteLove that backing fabric! Congrats on another finish. Enjoy the messing around time.
ReplyDeleteString Diamonds and Serpentine Stitches for the Win!!!
ReplyDeleteYour black vintage stripe fabric is delightful, and the string quilts looks bright and cheerful. Congrats on the finish!
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of your black/grey/white blocks is really interesting. I probably wouldn't have enough to make a quilt but if I included some mourning purples and some other greyish fabrics, I might. Great idea for a quilt!
Boy that quilt turned out pretty! Love the black with it. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.
