OMG: 10th anniversary giveaway
My first blog post was December 2, 2007. Ten years later: 827 posts documenting dozens of quilts, confessing to fabric acquisition (and disposition), travelogs, book reviews, and a few opinions.
To celebrate, I'm offering a giveaway. Two lucky winners will receive 10 long quarters (9 x width of fabric) from my stash. To qualify for the drawing you must follow the (simple) instructions:
(a) Leave a comment that includes two things: what block or quilt pattern you want to make in 2018 AND what your favorite new-to-you book was in 2017 (fiction, nonfiction, kids, graphic novel, whatever)
(b) Provide a way that I can email you if you are a winner. (I cannot respond to "no-reply" comments.)
(c) Have a U.S. address (I cannot ship out of the country).
(d) Reply by midnight Thursday, December 14. I will draw the winners Friday morning, December 15.
The 10th anniversary giveaway is my One Monthly Goal for December. (Whew. I wrote this post and linked to OMG just in time.)

Congratulations on 10 years, Nan. I also blog (academicpkm.org) and know what an effort of love this accomplishment of yours entails.
ReplyDeleteI won't enter your contest, since I am trying to curtail my new fabric acquisitions for a while. :-)
I will contribute a new great book (because the librarian in me can't resist!). I just finished listening to the audio version (the author reads it!) of Richard Paul Evans new Christmas novel, "The Noel Diary". Great feel good book with some depth.
Merry Christmas Nan!

ALABiblioquilter.
Congrats. I have a little blog, that I sometimes use, if I remember or am inspired, so I admire you for 10 years of blogging(I only learned about them last year) I want to make a Birds in the Air quilt with my Civil War reproduction fabrics in 2018. I am not sure if this qualifies as the new to me book but it sits out and inspires me all the time, just bought in 2017 Bonnie Hunter's Addicted to Scraps book.

Congrats! Ten years is a significant mile stone. I too plan on doing Bonnie Hunters Mystery Quilt. Haven't started yet... my favorite block is simple, the log cabin block. As for a good book I can whole heartedly recommend "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrick Blackman.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas,
Tracie

Thanks for all you do, and Congrats for 10 years
ReplyDeleteThe book I have used most this last year, Bonnie Hunters, More Adventures with Lenders and Enders. My all time favorite books that I have read and reread, are Shepard of the Hills, and the Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, Both real classics
I want to repeat making Irish Chain in 2018
Thanks for the chance at more fabric LOL
Sorry, you're "no-reply." Without your email address you won't be entered in the giveaway . . . but thanks for the book recommendations.
DeleteMy blog sort of died a few years ago. Perhaps your 10 years will inspire me to revive it as least occasionally. I'm looking forward to making a "Reticulum" quilt (designed by Thomas Knauer) as a wedding gift for a friend of my daughter's. I'm making it in 6 cool colors instead of the 4 red/yellow/oranges of the original pattern. Will take a little extra planning but I'm excited about it. My favorite book of 2017 (not alone here) was George Saunders' "Lincoln in the Bardo."
ReplyDeletehaven't found it yet still looking but maybe Irish chain but i tried the log cabin this year for the first time. I read mystery's constantly but just read Sarah Andrews for the first time and was pretty good bewtjwatgmaildotcom
ReplyDeleteOh, what the hey--you can't win if you don't enter! My favorite new-to-me book this year was "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant. Wonderful retelling of the story of Dinah and of being a woman in Biblical times.
ReplyDeleteFor 2018, I'd like to complete the I Spy quilt (the different-sized novelty squares framed in woodgrain-patterned fabric) that I started last century. One more UFO to get off the Island of Misfit Quilts!
I'm also trying to do better with blogging regularly. Now that we've gone solar, I have a bit more fodder for my keyboard spewings.
Happy Holidays to you and yours,
Carolyn

ReplyDeleteMy favorite book this year was Will's Red Coat.
Sue sue.quilts at verizon.net
Congratulations on 10 years!
ReplyDeleteThe block/pattern that I want to finish a group of sawtooth star blocks and get them into a quilt.
The book I red this year was The Auschwitz Escape by Joel Rosenberg.

Favorite new block will be a Churn Dash quilt I plan for 2018. It will be made of reproduction 30s and 40s fabrics, and it's one I've wanted to make for a couple of years, and it's taken me a long time to collect the fabrics. Favorite new book is Bonnie Hunter's Addicted to Scraps.........I want to make every single one of them!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Nann on a year of blogging! That is wonderful!

Congrats on 10 years! I don't need more fabric either. Have fun choosing a friend to receive it.
ReplyDeleteHi Nann, I've been reading your blog for a good part of those 10 years! I'm putting parts together for a snowball quilt, but I would really like to start on one of my "bucket list" quilts, a basket quilt. I'm a Patricia Cornwell fan and am currently reading "Dust", not my favorite...but right up there!
ReplyDeletekathy@dogtrnr.com
I plan to make an Irish chain. A book called Vintage Quilts - identification and price guide by Maggi McCormick Gordon. A book I've had for years and love is Better Homes & Gardens Two Color Quilts. It never goes on the bookshelf. Congratulations on 10 years!
ReplyDeleteI PLAN to make a Feathered Star. Fav book? Maybe "Uncle John's Old Faithful 30th Anniversary Bathroom Reader".
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 10 years! That's a whole lot of blogging! Keep up the good work, er, I mean fun.
In 2018 I want to make a Drunkard's Path quilt. It's hard to choose just one new book from 2017. So out of many candidates, I'll choose An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson. (YA fantasy is not normally my thing, but I read it on the recommendation of my daughter who specializes in it, and I really, really liked it.
ReplyDeleteMy newest block to learn is a free pieced block for an artsy quilt. I have just downloaded The Man from Moscow. Congrats on 10 years! That's dedication.
ReplyDeleteI want to make Sujata Shah's Organized Chaos in 2018. New to me books for 2017 were the historical fiction books by Jennifer Chiaverini - Mrs. Lincoln's Rival and the Spymistress - and just this week her newest book Enchantress of Numbers). Congratulations on ten years of blogging!!!
ReplyDeleteI want to really get back into quilting after a hiatus due to flooding during Hurricane Harvey. I just bought this pattern today and have not picked a color scheme- and will start unpacking my stash within the next few weeks after our move. Sweet Summertime by Emily Dennis. I have needed some escapism - First Comes Love by Emily Griffin. Reading your blog has been an easy way to feel involved in quilting these last few months while unable to sew. Congrats on 10 years of interesting articles and beautiful inspiring quilts!

I want to make an airplane quilt for my grandson in 2018 as to books I have to confess to being a reading "listener" I try to always have a book in my car to listen to as I drive. I've found being in heavy traffic doesn't bother me as much and sometimes I sit in my car a few extra minutes to get to a good spot to stop. I've been reading John Grisham and Michael Connelly no favorite book but I think in 2018 I want to read/listen to books I have heard about dealing with World War II and the (spell check is not helping) treatment of the Jewish people.

I don't know if I am a no reply poster I do enjoy reading your blog
Congrats on 10 yrs! Hope to make my Log Cabin quilt in 2018 & discovered Beverly Lewis books this year. Thanks for the giveaway. kountrypat at Hotmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to do some pieced quilts. I mostly needleturn appliqué and I love it but sometimes I want to make something scrappy and faster. I'm starting small with just 20x20 inch quilts and then progressing. Congratulations
ReplyDeleteWow. Ten years is great. I want to do a Hidden Wells quilt. A book I'd recommend is Secrets in Death by J D Robb. A futuristic mystery.

Congratulations on your anniversary, and how sweet to offer a giveaway to celebrate! My first quilt after Christmas is one I've made many times but it's so fun & easy. The pattern is called Jelly Strip Stash Buster Quilt from Cluck Cluck Sew and uses 2.5" strips. I have several jelly rolls to play with, just need to decide which one to start on. As for reading, I've been going through some Krista Davis books at our library, the latest of which was "Not a Creature was Purring". But when I get my quilting "mojo" in full gear, I don't have time to read, cook, or clean but I don't mind one bit. Here's to 10 more years of blogging! booksherry3@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your anniversary! I really shouldn't start any new block OR quilt in 2018, since I have so many already in process....but I will. I bought a kit called Indigo Influence so I will start that I am sure. As for books - I am in #7 of the Outlander series - An Echo in the Bone. Thank you for the chance to win! Sherry swhalen944@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 10 years! Time flies, doesn't it? I would like to make a Winding Ways quilt next year. I have the die from Accuquilt which will help with my accuracy. I have just discovered Penny Vincenzi and am addicted to her books. I finished the trilogy about the Lytton family that started with No Angel. I had to look it up on Amazon and went on and bought 4 more of her books. I am enjoying reading the other comments and getting new authors to check out. Great contest!

Congratulations on your blogiversary! I live in Canada so I'm out of the draw, but I'm sure I'll be making lots of interesting scrappy blocks in 2018 and will finish reading Brene Brown's book called "Braving the Wilderness".
ReplyDeleteBlogiversary is a new word for me - HAPPY BLOGIVERSARY to you. I love all the book recommendations. I use Overdrive from the library and it is a bit limiting, but I'll look for them with fingers crossed. I think I want to make a scrappy pineapple quilt next year. I'm overrun with scraps.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 10th!! My first quilt up in January will be Regatta. Great book find was The Girls from Ames. mjalto@gmail.com
ReplyDelete10 years - you're so right to celebrate!
ReplyDeleteThere is a storm at sea quilt in my 2018.
I am in love, love, love with Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books. OMG - the characters are so rich. Please share everyone's favorites. We all need to keep reading.

wow time does fly nann...has it really been THAT long we've been internet quilty pals???? my 2018 is jen kingwell's midnight at the oasis....and book? the latest ken follett "column of fire"....congrats my friend!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 10th Anniversary, Nann! In 2018 I definitely want to make Bonnie Hunter's leader/ender project of 2016 titled Hourglass. I will cut units from scraps as I work thru the monthly colors of the RSC challenge. My favorite New-t0-me book this year is Janet Collins Ruler Quilt Design Book, since I am into some serious ruler quilting this year.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to know that you are doing well! I have been wanting to make a Yellow Brick Road quilt and now is the time to do it. Fun book--Black Cat Crossing by Kay Finch.
ReplyDeleteDarlene, it's nice of you to comment but you are "no-reply" and you didn't provide your email address.
DeleteCongrats on your milestone. Next year I want to try a curved log cabin! I have found several authors I like this year (not counting quilting books). Debbie Macomber is my newest. I am always busy doing Quilts of Valor and look fo rnew patterns or fabrics to relieve the boredom. creations4u7@aol.com
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on blogging for 10 years! This really an achievement.. My favorite book from this year may have been The Orphan Train. I keeping thinking back to the difficulties this young girl faced and yet she managed to triumph. As for 2018 I want to make some of the blocks from the 4 by 5 Quilt Block Anthologhy. I'm fascinated by miniature blocks so I think I'll try some of these
ReplyDeleteMazeltov on your 10 year bloggiversary! I'm a recent follower, and am enjoying your quilts and commentary. For childrens' books, I recommend Jefferson's Sons and The War that Saved my Life, both by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. Living in Virginia, a book from the point of view of the boys Jefferson fathered with his slave Sally Hemmings was especially poignant. Bradley has a way with perspective, that her protagonists are so believable. For adults, I know I'm late to the game, but The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown was riveting. As for quilts, I would like to finish a Road to California quilt that was started eons ago by someone in our former pastor emeritus' family. I'm hand piecing it like she did, and have 5 more blocks to go (out of 30). After I finish the top, it will be my next hand quilting project. The pattern is a newspaper clipping of a Ruby McKim column.
ReplyDeleteHi Nann, congrats on 10 years! I have been aware of your online presence since I joined QuiltvilleChat many years ago. Appreciate your thoughts, comments and ideas! In 2018 I plan to mostly focus on finishing UFOs, which are plentiful around here. Of course there will be some new starts because necessity and temptation are too great! "On Ringo Lake" will definitely be worked on in 2018. As for new books, I have enjoyed "A Simple Life; Quilts inspired by the '50s" by Shelly Pagliai. Shelly cleverly uses her mother's teenage diary from the 1950s as inspiration for various quilt blocks. I am acquainted with Shelly and she is as down-to-earth and friendly as anyone I have ever met. Thanks for the opportunity to win such a nice gift!! Here's to 10 more years of blogging!!

Way to go Nann!!! 10 years is awesome. One of the quilt patterns I would like to make in 2018 is the Celtic Knot - and would like to get it in brain how to do the flying geese - the easy way. And books - wow, to choose just one for 2017, and like a variety. I will pick one by Jodi Picoult "Sing You Home" ("Nineteen Minutes" made me cry). I live in the USA, and just want to say "Congrats" to the winner - and to you, Nann for ten years - hope you decide to go for another ten! Cleo, kc7ttm@msn.com
ReplyDeleteHi, Nann,
ReplyDeleteYou are one of the most dedicated and accomplished quilters that I know. And a beautiful person, as well, who connects people together (as evidenced by the organizations to which you belong and ALABiblioquilters specifically).
I'm hoping to do the Louisiana quilt block this year....AND to finish quilting my daughter's high school graduation quilt (she graduated in 2006!).
As for my favorite book this year...so hard to pick, so I'm going to fudge and say the "Ladies of Covington Send Their Love" and every book in that series which follows it. And I'm also going to say Victoria Laurie's latest book, "A Panicked Premonition". Laurie's series is just plain fun to read. The Covington series is charming and inspiring about three women of a certain age who take the plunge and decide to live together in a small town away from everything they know.
Keep on blogging!
Love and hugs,
Jill

Nann, I'm one of your Sisters and I so enjoy your blog. I read and quilt, too. I'm hoping to do a modern quilt next year and would like to try the Eads quilt pattern. I enjoyed "The Marriage of Opposites" by Alice Hoffman along with many other books. Thanks for your recommendations!

Congratulations on 10 years!
ReplyDeleteI discovered Carol Dean Jones and read all 10 of The Quilting Cozy books and am now reading Karen DeWitt's The Bunco Club books. I've heard of both authors and I'm really glad I decided to read the books. Such fun reads.
I want to make a few mini quilts from Kathleen Tracy's book. I have 1 finished and the next one planned.
Wow, 10 years! Good for you! I would like to finish the Jane Stickle quilt in 2018. I started it years ago, and now I'm working on the triangles around the outside. The most recent book I bought was Edyta Sitar's "Little Handful of Scraps", a book about small quilts. I haven't made any of the quilts in it yet, but I will in 2018. Hope you continue to blog for a long time in the future, I enjoy your blog. I have no idea if I'm a no-reply blogger or not, but if I am, you can reach me at Grandmajudyhansen@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on ten years of blogging! This is something I'd like to try.
ReplyDeleteI wish to do a Morning Star quilt top, using Blues and white. I've been saving fat quarters for YEARS! Though I might try to do some of the Louisiana blocks that are happening on the ALABiblioquilters list. (You can email me there)
My favorite 2017 book is Gypsying After 40: A Guide to Adventure and Self-Discovery by Robert W. Harris

10 years - how wonderful. That is just about the time I joined the Houston Guild. For 2018, I want to finish On Ringo Lake, my first mystery quilt, and a friendship star quilt using my polka-dot collection. I am glad you said a "new to you" book since I received "American Quilts" by Robert Shaw a few months ago. I have spent many evenings reading and looking at the pictures and expect to spend many more dreaming of quilts to make. To reach me -- ebwhite11026 at sbcglobal . net
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I don't know how long I've been reading your blog but I have really enjoyed it... multiple years I know for sure but not how many! I want to finish up a quilt I started for my son last year. The block is relatively simple, 'flippy corners' on two opposite sides and the layout makes a pattern. But it's large and there are LOTS of them! The best book I read this year is The Heir Apparent, A Life of Edward VII, the Playboy Prince by Jane Ridley. I picked it up at my local library's used book sale for $3. I picked it specifically, both because I love history and it was a big chunky book that would take me through a lot of sessions in waiting rooms at the dentist! It's a winner.
