I put the baby quilt (see last week's post) aside for a bit. I ought to get going on Christmas items. I know what I'm going to make and I just have to get started. But, instead, I took handfuls of 1.5" squares, sewed them into twos and then fours and here is where I ended up.
This is "Four Patch X" from Bonnie Hunter's "Addicted to Scraps" feature in Quiltmaker magaine. Her pattern uses 2" squares but I am sure she would be the first to say it's okay to use any size! My blocks are 6.25" unfinished, and thus 5.75" finished. I think the light blue sashing will provide a visual relief from the bright yellow. It will also bring out the shoofly design made by the block corners and the cornerstones.

These little scrappy projects are like eating chips - can't seem to stop. This one of yours is so pretty. Love the happy yellow, and the blue shoo-flies.
ReplyDeleteI like the Blue Sashings and secondary formation of the Shoofly blocks.
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt! The yellow really sets it off.
ReplyDeleteWhat a good looking scrap quilt. I really want to run up to the studio and start this... but I won't. I need to finish a few (million) UFOS first. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh Nan - opening the photo I gasped with delight at this seemingless humble scrappy quilt. It's luscious - If I was seeing it in person, I'd have to check out every square and touch them as I went. You did GOOOOOD!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your scrappy X quilt, and you are absolutely right about using the light blue sashings to form shooflies.

Nann, I feel like Elaine Adair. This is a gorgeous, yummy scrappy quilt! I love the sashing fabric too.
ReplyDeleteYes, that light blue will look great with your blocks. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI have the 1.5 " strip die for the GO and have been adding TO DO's to my scrappy pile. i can see doing strip sets and having some mindless sewing with a wonderful outcome!
ReplyDeleteSometimes sewing lots of little bits together is just the right therapy. The light blue and dark blue together do a great job of giving the yellow a bit of space, such cute little Shooflies.
ReplyDeleteOh! I love your little shoo flys. I no longer have the patience to deal with such little pieces. I'm glad you do so we can get the pleasure of seeing it!
ReplyDeleteOooo Love this! I'm saving little 1.5" squares and now I know what I can do with them when I get ready to sew them together. (maybe 20 years from now) LOL
ReplyDeleteWhat a happy-looking combo of the yellow with all the bright scraps! The x's look like old dutch windmills to me.
ReplyDeleteScrappy is best! This is a great use for those small squares that are so hard to part with. Great job!
ReplyDeleteLove your layout on this one :)
ReplyDeletethat is wonderful!! I like it with the smaller squares. And the blues are great with the yellow.
ReplyDeleteI just love a Bonnie Hunter project! Yours is wonderful. I finished two just recently too. I'm pulling fabric for Orca Bay Mystery! Sandi
ReplyDeleteDang! Now I have to make one. My 1.5" box runneth over and this is a good way to tame it. How wide is your sashing?
