Friday check in: it's cold! + more trips + reading

An hour after I took this screenshot the temperature dropped another 2 degrees.

The storm has been in the forecast all week and it's probably affecting where you are.   We're on the edge of the snow with just 1"-2" predicted for tomorrow.

The retired library directors are meeting for lunch today but LS and I, who were going to ride together, have decided to stay in our respective homes.   I have enough to keep me busy.

I only need 37 Trip Around the World blocks but I'm having such great fun with color/pattern placement that there will be 42.  A few extras won't hurt.

I have no recollection of acquiring some of the batiks that keep coming out of the bins.

The Page Turner is a Facebook book club with a difference.  The reading challenge is self-paced and relies on prompts rather than specific titles (with the exception of TPTBOY, the Page Turner Book of the Year, which everyone reads).  Participants can interpret the prompt however they choose.   I confess that I've begun TPT several years and read in most, though not all, of the categories.  (So many books, so little time....)

The Book of Lost Friends fulfills the 2026 prompt for "a book with dual timelines."  It is set in 1875 and 1987.  Then: a former slave searches for her family.   Now: a young teacher helps the students in a small Louisiana town to discover their heritage. It's a good story.

I listened to the multi-voiced audio edition ($1 from library book sale rack).

  2. Great blocks! Brrrrrrrr. We keep "bouncing" from 23-32 and have set a new record for days without sun. For us in this valley that is an inversion more than fog in winter.

    Happy reading :-)

  4. That would be a 5-suitcase weather warning here in Texas (the number with which Ted Cruz would escape to the Bahamas). We're expecting 1-suitcase weather this weekend--he'll barely have time to unpack his Speedo before the temps reach "normal" wintertime ranges here and he'll feel safe to live in the same state as his constituents. He makes leeches look good.

Love the way the circles pop where the TATW blocks come together at the corners!

  6. Brrr! We're on the edge of the snow here, too, but still very cold. Looks like you have the bottomless batik bin there! I liked that book a lot. Did you like the multiple reader style for the audiobook?

  9. Oh, don’t your TATW blocks look enchanting. This is how I end up with extra blocks, too. I read The Book of Lost Friends a few years ago. Such a good read. My brother mapped some of these old East Texas cemeteries in grad school. Stay warm.

  10. The TATW blocks are looking good. Why stop if you've got a groove going with them and scraps to use up. Stay warm. It's not quite that cold here, but close. The apps are saying we ended up with a little over 5 inches of snow.

  11. It's upsetting to read in the comments about a certain politician in a speedo. Meanwhile snowing like mad here in Virginia and I am looking at 3 baby quilts I gave a young couple over the years - they wonder if the quilts could be put together to make one twin sized quilt now that they are out of the baby business. I suggested I just make them 3 "big kid" quilts instead but I'm afraid I am going to have to try to put baby quilts together. It's going to be amazingly unattractive but is something to think about in the snow.

Thanks as always for the book review.

  12. It was -30C here and definitely not fit for man nor beast to be outside. We luckily have missed the huge snowfall that fell south of us yesterday - we got some but not what they were predicting.
Thank you for the book review; I'll see if our library has a copy available.
