On Wednesday the Zion Woman's Club (Kathy, Jeanne, and I) staffed the t-shirt sales table at Camp I Am Me. The Illinois Fire Safety Alliance sponsors the week-long overnight camp for children and teens who have suffered burn injuries. This is the 34th year and there are 52 campers from all over Illinois. There's no charge to the campers (even transportation is provided). YMCA Camp Duncan is a century-old campground that used to be way out in the country.
There was a parade with fire trucks from departments all over the area, sirens wailing. Brats and burgers for lunch.
The Zion Park District summer concert series began yesterday with Hollywood Swinging, a tribute band for Kool and the Gang. Not my usual kind of music but fun (and free!) on a beautiful evening. Though pushing S across the grass in the wheelchair had become a challenge, I missed his company. Yes, I could have called around to find a friend to join me but I made the decision to go at the last minute. Glad I did.

In the studio: it's a flimsy!I had to do some ripping and resewing to get the blocks oriented correctly. I don't think there will be a border. 66 . 72. 6" blocks.

nice finish....charting new territory by going alone...yes sometimes it's ok....i miss going to free concerts in the summer...
ReplyDeleteFun concerts in the summer. It's a nice way to get out, meet new people and enjoy music! I like your flimsy. What a great use of scraps!--TerryK@OnGoingProjects
ReplyDeleteGlad to see nice clean zigs and zags marching along the top--I hope Jamie was worth the distracted sewing!
ReplyDeleteA wry smile on my lips at "...used to be way out in the country." Trips I take as a matter of course these days to get through our growing suburb used to be adventures in not getting lost in the "wilderness".

Both the summer camp shift and the concert sound fun! Glad you enjoyed both. Your quilt top is wonderful - thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteGreat scrappy quilt top. I think that might be my next donation project for the bin of 2-1/2" squares.
ReplyDeleteI love the scrappy top! Great work with the Fire Safety Alliance. My mom worked with the burn unit and other units in this part of Pennsylvania. It is wonderful that the kids can know and relate to other kids who suffered as they did. Wonderful idea!
ReplyDeleteAnother great flimsy - and I can certainly see how it would be a challenge to get all the 'zigs' so they 'zagged' in the correct way.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing camp - here they hold one called Camp Good Grief for children dealing with bereavement. It is always well attended and much appreciated in the community.
ReplyDeleteYou've had a busy week. Very fun scrappy quilt top. The teal made a very nice background.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful camp and great volunteers to put it on over the years.
ReplyDeleteI finally realized your top is a modified Rail Fence. Clever variation. I love the backgrounds color.

The camp sounds like a very worthwhile project to support, yay you! And the concert - sometimes a total change of pace is just what is needed. It's suddenly so hot here that outdoor anything is out of the question, but it can't last forever, right?

Those kinds of camps are such gifts to those who need them. Nice to be at a concert and good that you could do it on your own; that is not easy.
ReplyDeleteYou are just the energizer bunny!! look at all the fun things you go to!!
