I'm thoroughly caught up in The American Revolution, the new Ken Burns documentary. Though all episodes are streaming now, I'm watching each evening on WTTW, the Chicago PBS station.
The November issue of The Atlantic has an article by Burns about making the show. He talks about the challenges of recreating events from two centuries ago. There are many written records but of course none of the photographs, film footage, or oral histories used in his films about the Civil War, WWII, and Vietnam. He gives great credit to the many reenactors who participated.
Rainbow 9-Patch is finished. I used the serpentine stitch. The quilting took one evening -- four hours. (News, Ken Burns, and a one-hour episode of an Acorn mystery.)
I have overflowing tubs of backing fabrics but I found these bright prints on another shelf. The top right and the bottom are different colorways of the same print.
Total fabric used: 7-1/2 yards.
I have in mind making 72 blocks to finish at 64 x 72 (bigger if I add a border).
*Thrifted shirts. Stevens' shirts are still in the closet.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to set 9 patches! Love it, and the shirtings project. It looks so soft. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

We, too, are watching every night! It's so well done, and I'm learning a lot. Your RSC quilt is a beautiful finish - amazing to me that you can get it quilted in an evening. What Acorn show are you watching? The rearranged quilts made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteThe florals were a good pick for the back of the Rainbow 9 patch quilt. Nice finish!
ReplyDeleteThe shirtings quilt looks so soft and inviting, and a sure winner with the lucky eventual recipient. I've never collected thrift store shirts since they tend to be quite expensive around here.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching the American Revolution each night, too. I don't watch much TV, so it's a challenge to sit here for 2 hours, glued to the screen. That must have been quite a downdraft that came down the chimney to rearrange the quilt pile.

Saving the American Revolution for when things settle down here. I love your Rainbow 9 patch! Your quilt draft repeller made me laugh. Years ago when we had two main power outages (for days), I used quilts around our large drafty window. Worked great! Love that shirting piece as well! Sending hugs!
ReplyDeleteRainbow looks like a challenge to assemble but it turned out beautifully. I must say I'm a fan of the shirting quilt though because blue is my favourite colour.
ReplyDeleteWe do not use our fireplace either. If that is an insert, it can be removed and the opening used for storage - if the chimney is closed (flue or for real). I have seen people use the space for books some supposed it could become an area for folded quilts?
ReplyDeleteThings have prevented me from watching all of The American Revolution episodes. I have watched several interview with him and love how he and the others included re-enactors, drone footage, etc., to bring the Revolution to life in a small way.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw you making the one-color nine-patch blocks I imagined you were making the snowball and 9-patch that I've seen others make. Yours is an fun way to use many blocks.
Your thrifted shirt blocks have such a calm look about them. Someone will love this quilt!
