Weekly update: busy weekend

Batik hexies
Hexies made from silk neckties have been my take-along handwork project for several years. (Here is an example.) The assembled rosettes have gotten ungainly and difficult to keep discreetly in my lap when I'm in a meeting.  Because of that I resurrected an even older hexie project to take along to conventions (three this month!) and long meetings.  These batik hexagons are 1".

I didn't get much sewing done once things got underway at the  P.E.O. state convention in Springfield.  Since that's a three-and-a-half hour drive from home and my committee meeting was at 10:00 Friday morning my fellow committee member Mindy and I drove down Thursday afternoon.  (I like the just-before atmosphere of a conference: I can feel the potential energy that is soon to be reality.)   Chapter delegates and visitors began arriving Friday afternoon.  The fundraising walk to benefit Cottey College was scenic  but warm (89 degrees!).
This year's theme was "Fired Up for P.E.O." with a hot-air balloon motif.

I saw many long-time sisters and met new ones. P.E.O. has touched our lives, of course, but it's also affected 110,000 women who have received more than $308,000,000 from P.E.O. projects:
grants, scholarships, and loans for higher education.  Add to that Cottey College (owned and operated by P.E.O.) and the Illinois state projects (emergency assistance and senior housing assistance grants).  Wow!

I served on the Lulu Corkhill Williams Friendship Fund Committee for three years.  Pat and Laura are now good friends. Gail was the newbie (replacing me).
Sue is an Alpha Gamma Delta sister as well as a P.E.O. sister.

P.E.O. will celebrate its sesquicentennial in 2019.

The history exhibit is a special interest of mine. In the olden days each state annual convention was summarized in the magazine. (Not shown: two columns of dense type. No photos.)

Chapter minutes when Lulu Corkhill Williams was the guest speaker.

Convention concluded at 11:00 Sunday morning with the announcement of the 2017-18 theme.

I did manage early-morning walks on Friday and Saturday.  This is carduus nutans or Showy Thistle. I had never seen it before. Showy indeed!

  1. May I suggest "you" (or pass this along to whomever is in charge) take a look at some Sweet Adeline choruses near the convention site (this site will give you a starting point: https://sweetadelines.com/) and see if there are any quartets that would like to sing for you? I know my quartet loves to sing the Star-Spangled Banner to open events, and we've sung several patriotic songs at various Veteran-related ceremonies. Given enough lead-time, a quartet could provide a nice selection of songs to help you Raise Your Voices. Because SAI is also a non-profit, there's a chance they'd do it for free (but a little cash is never turned down--maintaining a quartet incurs a surprising amount of expenses!)

  2. Love your silk hexi tie project. Did you hand wash or machine wash them first? Where did you get all your ties?

  6. Hi Nann, your hexies are beautiful! What a great take-along project. We're also very impressed by the way you keep track of your fabric acquistions and inventory. It's wonderful to be so organized and know exactly what's on hand. We always enjoy reading your very interesting blog ! Warm wishes, from Marina and Daryl Lynn
