Mid-autumn at the beach

It was indeed a beautiful weekend in northeasternmost Illinois.   I took these photos Saturday afternoon. The wind whipped the tree branches around but the lake was placid.

The lefthand photo was taken in June. It shows a washed-out culvert. The righthand photo, taken Saturday, shows the new replacement.

I found this woolly bear caterpillar on the path.  The center band is pretty narrow -- a mild winter?  Here's what the experts say about the woolly bear's ability to predict winter weather: from NPR.  It grows up to be an Isabella Tiger Moth.
