DWM: Ornaments, Orca Bay, and Prairie Queen

I was thankful for time off this holiday weekend.  We took a couple of long walks the days that the weather was clement, had a delicious turkey dinner (with lots of 'planned-over' turkey), and avoided shopping as much as possible.  I got a lot of sewing done.
61 ornaments (for library staff and trustees).  The holly leaves and berries are fused and free-motion-quilted.

Orca Bay Step 2.  These 3.5" foundation-pieced string blocks were easy to make.

The Block Swappers had a quarterly swap for sets of units made up of 4-patches and HSTs in autumn colors.  The unfinished size was 4.5". I cut ALL the units down to 3.5", added a center square, and made 74 9.5" Prairie Queen blocks. The design wall shows 49 of them. I've auditioned many different fabrics to use as sashing, but no decision yet. (There is so much going on in each block that they need to be separated by sashing.)

Take a look at other design walls and Orca Bay blocks today!

  1. WOW! So much done. My quilting list included machine quilting a nine panel baltimore, tracing "Over the River", and finish cutting out a totem pole to hand applique. Due to being surrogate parents to a former student kicked out of his home (read as abusive parents), I did some hand quilting and personal comforting. A good trade off I think.

  2. Great job on all your projects. Haven't had a chance to start my OB string blocks yet ... hopefully today!
Re your sashing - I'm sure Bonnie would go for something funky like cheddar. How about picking the colour you want to dominate the quilt as a whole? Maybe try going for neutral cornerstones in the sashing to give a shoofly effect? Which ever way you go, have fun :)

  4. You've been busy! I like how your block swappers quilt is coming along. Your string blocks look just great. I really like that smaller size and have been toying putting something like that into a quilt I'm beginning.

  7. I like your swap blocks: fall colors are my favorites. I would probably sash with cream using colored cornerstones, maybe out of a multicolored fabric that I would also use as a second, larger border (cream for the first). See I can really get into this.
